FORD in India

On 9th September 2021 one of the biggest and most influential automobile manufacturers closed all operations in India. The company in question if Ford Motor Company the biggest manufacturer of America automobiles. The big, muscular cars offered by ford were a breath of fresh air from the tech savvy German and the average Japanese cars. Ford was among the few remaining companies that offers a supercharged V8 which is largely extinct in the rest of the market also Ford is probably the only company to offer jet black as a factory colour scheme.

From the very beginning days of Ford in Mr Hendry Ford’s workshop in Detroit, thought two world wars and the financial crises Ford has stood strong against its rivals. The success formula for Ford has remained the same from the days of its founder that is Standardisation, mass production and the weight of American steel. Ford has made past crash test standards simply by having a thicker steel body also the big V8 in spite of its thrust can be reduced in power to meet emission regulations.

Sadly in spite of the simplicity of Ford cars it was never suitable for the Indian car market, Indian roads are to narrow to navigate such big cars, Ford cars are made for cross country cruising which are done in India by trains and obviously the fuel consumption of Ford cars are uneconomical in the Indian hemisphere. Thus even though Ford was selling well In India it along with GM, Chevrolet and some other American companies had to leave.

India was also the place where most of the vehicles are made by Ford, it was a very good investment in the 90s as Indian labour was cheap and allowed them to make very affordable cars but times have changed and labour costs have increased taking the edge of “Made in India” away.

Ford endeavour probably would have been the best SUV and car ever put on the Indian market. Endeavour with its bulky battleship like look completely wiped the floor with Toyota Fortuner, the fact of getting an 3.2 litre diesel automatic for 34 Lakhs is unheard of in the market. The 470Nm torque from near ideal is enough to bury Fortuner and the other SUVs. There was supposed to be a 2nd generation of Endeavour to be launched by Ford but sadly Ford bailed out before it was ready.

Truth to be told the exile of Ford was destined to happen as the American and Indian market is very different from each other. Ford has promised to continue running its service centres and support foreign imports into India but the absence of ford has left a gushing gap in the market which the other manufacturers are unable to fill. But the future of Ford India maybe bright Ford has promised to come back into India in the coming years when the market is suitable and maybe we will get the taste of big American muscle car soon.
